Soccer Games

Jamey has been quite excited to sport his new Croatian soccer jersey twice this week as he watched the “Euro” soccer tournament games on big screen televisions in downtown Rijeka with hundreds of fans. Unfortunately, Croatia lost to Turkey, so Jamey will not be able to enjoy anymore games. Whoa! European soccer really is as crazy as it appears on TV. Granted I’ve only seen about 30 minutes of actual play before arriving, and I know little to nothing about the sport itself, but everyone gets into it. Everyone wants to talk about it, and it’s a great way to engage people in conversation. I didn’t actually get pictures of the crowds (I’m horrible about remembering to carry and use the camera), but several of us watched the game against Poland in the city square. There were flares, whistles, fireworks, songs, screams, and red-white checkerboard pattern clothes everywhere. It’s part of the national seal and flag of Croatia. Croatia beat Poland, but then lost in a tragic ending to Turkey. No trash-talking from you Mrs. Julie Duarte! J The city of Rijeka was eerily quiet for the next two days.
